Case Study

Early access to occupational health services

1. Description

A food production company introduced a number of new machines and equipment to improve productivity. However after one week a number of employees had injured themselves using the equipment due to lack of knowledge of equipment ergonomics. Many individuals within the workforce refused to continue to work with the new machinery without proper training. The food production company requested immediate attention from an occupational health service to ensure productivity levels did not drop.

2. The intervention

Following a consultation with a occupational health service it was arranged for a physiotherapist to visit the company the following day to complete a job task analysis and ergonomic training relevant to the new equipment. The physiotherapist provided an interactive workshop including a practical manual handling training session with the equipment and also a lecture based upon correct movement patterns and injury prevention. Those who were previously injured using the new equipment were introduced to a individualised return to work programme immediately.

3. The results

Following the intervention from the occupational health service the food production company reported that all staff were happy and confident to use the new equipment safely. The workers who required a return to work programme resumed full working responsibilities within one month.
